I’ve done 3 short stories 3 days in a row. So I felt like I deserved a small break today. Which means it’s another day for a poem from the past. This is a love poem I wrote during my community college days after a big heartbreak, circa 2007 or 2008. Enjoy.
On a lonely night barking at the moon
Never would I have guessed to find happiness so soon
I found a small blue bird in need of some care
Her wing was broken and needed repair
My first instinct was to make this a snack
A small meal not fit for the pack
I drew closer and saw this small creature
A friend of the sky with its small features
Helpless on the ground awaiting a swift sleep
A snap of the jaws and she was mine to keep
But I could not bring myself to kill
While she waited there perfectly still
She asked me for help in her time of need
And I had to control this instinct for greed
I held her so gently, keeping her close
Maybe this love was what I needed the most
Soft chirping calming my senses
Against this creature so defenseless
Her wing was saved and so was her life
Together we brought an end to all of our strife
I needed her and she needed me
A star-crossed friendship was the key
She would sing me a song and I’d howl all my own
Together we made a mix-matched home
Then the day came when we said our goodbyes
The sadness welled up in both of our eyes
I remember my small blue bird and her beautiful song
And her beautiful wings, I hadn’t seen for so long
We parted our paths, but someday you’ll see
We’ll be back together, my blue bird and me.
…
But even if I never see her again
I will always remember my beautiful friend.
