I’m figuring out how to do my Day 5 short story challenge and am hitting a bit of a writer’s block because it’s much more personal. It’s the story of how my parents met but in Victorian England. While I’m very familiar with the story that my parents have told me, I think trying to use them and make something up is giving me hesitation. So I’ll complete it tomorrow, but I figured I’d post something anyways.
This is an old poem I wrote and have saved on my computer. It’s dated 2011-04-13. At least that’s the creation date on the file. It’s around the time I decided to change my career pursuit and become an engineer. It seems fitting to post it here at a time I’m looking to turn back and revisit my old craft. Enjoy.
And I walked down a path leading to nowhere
Each step gently hitting the ground
Creating a beat with the universe
Right, left, right, left, right, left…
The soft gravel under my shoe
Left imprints of where I had gone
And others that had walked this path with me
By my side and before my time
I could see where people had joined and left my path
Entering with love and leaving in tears
Each footprint a memory in sand
A collage of the struggle and journey
Leading to here, now
Why do I walk this path
When there are others around me
That offer a much simpler
Or maybe even happier ending
And I walked down a path leading to nowhere
Taking note of the earth
That I had been walking all over
Without even a thank you
Thank you earth for this path
But there is more here than just a path
Thank you trees for your shade
Thank you wind for your cool breeze
Thank you birds for your music
Thank you plants for your fruit
Thank you water for your nourishing touch
Thank you sun for your life
Thank you moon and stars for your light in darkness
And thank you fire for your warmth
Had they heard my eternal gratitude for their gifts?
Where is the end
Is there a destination
Or having I been walking all this way
Only to find a stump to sit on
And I walked down a path leading to nowhere
Quietly humming myself a tune
Enjoying the sun and breeze of the day
